On a recent trip to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, a friend of mine and I ventured into the nearby town of Hollywood to visit a magic shop in search of unique card backs and the righteous machinations of one S. W. Erdnase. We found some of what we were looking for at this shop, but more to the point on the same block we found a great, little used bookshop.
In the back of the shop were dollar bins of 45's. It was littered with what were probably local hits of the day -- "Miami Beach Rumba", Les "Careno Cuban Boys," and the like. Amidst the discs was this one-sided flexi-disc clearly marked "THIS IS A RECORD" on its shiny, silver label. Intrigued by this, its flexi-disc nature, and the title, "Swiss Polka - With 2 Lovely Hankies," I added it to my growing pile.
At the front counter, I found my friend being regaled by the shopkeeper of tales of a mimeographed magic magazine that had come through the store once, his travails at brewing and dipping his own flashpaper, and the ribald tales of one Maskilyn the Mage (which we both misunderstood at the time as "Mescaline the Mage").
When he paused, I handed the shopkeep the few records that I wanted to buy. The flexidisc was on top. He noticed its unique nature and (in a stunning moment of coincidental word choice) asked me, "What is this?" The only reply was of course, "This is a record."
