Spin April 1993 When it's on, Superchunk plays some of the best, anthemic alternative rock around--noisy guitar wrapped around uplifting, punk-pop melodies with singer-guitarist Mac McCaughan's high-pitched, boyish voice providing a naive, earnest quality. Mouth is full-on; it's feel similar to the end of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, the scene in Say Anything in which Diane confesses her love to Lloyd, or the triumphant climax of any sports movie. Exhilirating. Superchunk, "Mower"/"On the Mouth" (Merge) Rubs our faces in everything dubious about the band--neck-breaking tempos scurrying into oblivion, lyric after lyric bemoaning domestic anomie ("I've never even been to your new house / But I bet I know exactly what it's like!"). But Mac McCaughan, the truest of punk believers, purges his powerlessness passionately.
