I'm still behind on all my stuff, so I'm offering another journal of concert appearances and the like. i promise, i'll regroup over thanksgiving so i can bring you more stuff. But first, info: SPIN,DEC: A popular Chicago nightclub, Lounge Ax, may have to close their doors due to red tape. To help raise money for their legal defense, Chicago's Touch and Go label (who distributes Merge, incidentally) is putting a benefit comp. together including tracks from Sebadoh, Jesus Lizard and....SUPERCHUNK. No album title is given, so keep your eyes peeled. "STRINGS" Album reviews in: The LA Weekly, Tower Records' Pulse!, "U" Magazine (a free college mag) - also lists "strings" as the most popular "college'" album this month. +there's a page or so on the CHUNK in the new book, SPIN'S GUIDE TO ALTERNATIVE MUSIC...it's the worst thing i have ever read - they bash "NO POCKY.." (my fave CHUNKlp, incidentally), then proceed to virtually masterbate over the song "COOL" - spending most of the page talking about that and "SLACK MOTHERFUCKER" and how "NO POCKY" wouldn't have sucked if "COOL" was on it..whatever. SPIN should roll over and die. ONWARD: from spencer@portal.ca: Set List In Order Kinda-----(vancouver,canada)- eastern terminal, animated airplanes over germany, seed toss, precision auto, silver leaf and snowy tears, the question is how fast, iron on, driveway to driveway, hyper enough, untied, skip steps one and three, the first part, 100000 Fireflies (set closer) ---encore----mower, cast iron review: firstly i am still deaf. i stood (that's the wrong word) at mac's feet. my head was between two amps and it was the most hifgh energy show i have ever been to. the karl hendricks three were alright and they were awesome when jim wilbur came out to play a song. jim looks so much younger all of a sudden. anyways that kinda got my blood pumping. then the spinanes came out and i worked myu way to the front. good set mostly new soongs. they played this new one called meridean and it was gr8. mac played keyboards for them during the second to last song but you couldnt hear them. then the set ended and i was gettin quite excited. i was at thevery front right in fron t of macs mic - i could feel tthe crunch of the pushy jam kidz as superchunk got ready to take the stage. where i was room to move for the spinanes i had to cram myself in a little triangle for superchunk. i had one hand on an amp and another on the stage. it was crazy. mac was wearing the blue head shirt. they get up and jim says "does anyone want me to tell you some jokes" and the fuckheads in the crowd say no. jim says "well then, fuck you all". the crowd had a total attitude and they were so rowdy. i think mac liked the hi energy crowd. but i think jim hated them. anyways they broke into easren terminal with rebecca on keyboards and i couldnt beleive what a violent crowd it was. i was scared. anyways they ripp[ed through that set with mac flamboyantly jumpin all over and laura with little face ever shown. jon was gr8 to watch on drums. my highlight had to be untied. i couldnt beleive they played it cuz i thought it was kinda on the dead live list. it was an awesome concert though and the biggest reaction of the night went to (drum roll)... HyperEnough and Animated Airplanes over Germany. I do beleive superchunk has made alot of new fans. the crowd was really young. like average age of 18 even though the show wasnt all ages. mower rawked. the crowd seemed unfamiliar with the pre-foolish songs. but they knew mower from incidental. so theres my little review. + commentary from jbeauli@mstar.com : I'd really like to hear what other Superchunk fans think of Strings. At this point, I'd have to say that it is my least favorite of their lps. The more complicated song structures don't bother me. I think its more the way that it was produced that bothers me. When I first listened to the "Hyper Enough" single I really hated the way that the "soaring" guitar bit sounded - it struck me as sounding almost canned. I thought that "Never Too Young To Smoke" sounded better. "Detroit.." got the most repeated plays off of that single. Superchunk is probably my favorite band right now, and it really bothersme that their new lp isn't totally rocking my world. I had a hard time getting into "On the Mouth" at first, but it grew on my pretty quickly. I really love "Foolish" too, and it took even longer to grow on me than "On the Mouth". So what I am hoping here is that this is just a continuation of that trend, and one day it will dawn on me how utterly brilliant "Strings" is. But right now, "Slow Note from a Sinking Ship" is spending a lot more time in my cd player. Any chance that in the next mailing you could ask people for their reactions, and then send them out so everyone can compare notes? (DAVE's note: as you wish- and here's another letter from joe-) I read somewhere that there was an interview with Laura in the Novemeber issue of Seventeen. So I read it while I was waiting in line at the grocery store. It's pretty short - just a few short (and not particularly interesting) questions. We learn that: _Green Flowers, Blue Fish_ is her favorite song on the album (and it was going to be on the Johnny Mnmnmnmnonic soundtrack). / Her hobby is sewing / Her astrological sign is Sagitarius (I think). (DAVE: here's another from Joe, who wins this issue's "Most Prolific" award) From the Chicago Reader (November 3, 1995) "Lost all those years ago in the anthemnic furor of "Slack Motherfucker" and the unabashed revival of Husker Du's blaring formalism and pogo dancing was the fact that Chapel Hill vets Superchunk are ultimately in service to the hook. Over the course of a half dozen albums their shound has grown consistently more expansive. They've settled into slower material and carefully toyed with familiar structures. They continue to do these things on the new _Here's where the Strings Come In_ (Merge). But the huge melodies flying out of Mac McCaughan's mouth are what define the band. Sure their sound depends on Jon Wurster's skin pounding, the rumbling bottom of Laura Ballance's bass, and and the corrosive lattice of guitar raked out by McCaughan and Jim Wilbur, but by now its obvious that the din exists primarily to celebrate the melody. If Superchunk decide one day to chase after some free-jazz muse or to go techno it would come as quite a shock; they know preciesly what they're doing, and even if the music has stopped challenging them, their lyrics have become more thoughtful and they haven't stopped finding those hooks. All rights reserved and all of that legal stuff that I'm not sure about. +++if you guys have CHUNK bootlegs, let me know - i'm trying to get a list together of those, too...thanks in advance+++ +if anyone's interested, jbusch@acs.bu.edu runs a small web page for Poster Children, which can be found at http://physics.bu.edu/~jbusch/ +one up from Bigjiln111@aol.com : (HALLOWEEN NITE REVIEW) Just saw Superchunk last night at the Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado. I only caught the tail end of the Karl Hendricks Trio and they were so-so. The place was packed but not everyone was in costume. Mac from Superchunk was in costume, wearing a devil's hat ( horns on it) and a devil's tail. Anyways, here goes... "This is the first song we ever wrote."- Mac right before breaking into... >What Do I<>Cast Iron<>Hyper Enough< ---Pause in show as Mac tells us it's the drummer's birthday so the whole crowd sings happy birthday to John--- >Eastern Terminal<>Iron On<>Water wings<>Driveway to Driveway<>Punch me Harder< (Fuck YES!)>Seed Toss<>Silverleaf and Snowy Tears<>Mower<>Sick to Move<>First Part<------Encore:>The Question is How Fast< ----pause as Mac invites some "crazy dancers" from the pit onstage to add to the fun. A couple of ska suit guys, one really drunk guy and 3 hot girls...one of whom is dressed like one of the Anarchy Cheerleaders from the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Nirvana video...she's been wavin her big pom poms the whole show and now she's up on stage and the scene is quite festive...Boulder has been partying for 5 days straight for Halloween by this point....Anyways with "crazy dancers" and all they break into... >Throwing ThingsPrecision Auto< All in all another amazing Superchunk show at the Fox... +here's another from METYVEK@aol.com: here's the set list and a few notes from the 10/28 Portland, OR show (songs are pretty much in order). Iron On, Water Wings, Skip Steps 1 & 3, Eastern Terminal, Mower, Package Thief, Silver Leaf and Snowy Tears, Untied, Driveway to Driveway, Animated Airplanes Over Germany, Hyper Enough, Baxter, The First part, Why Do You have to put a Date on Everything, Here's Where the Strings Come In. ENCORES: The Question Is How Fast, Throwing Things. -After Iron On, Jim introduced the band and carefully and clearly spelled Superchunk for the crowd. -Mower was a request that was played after a short technical-difficulty brak. -Early in the show, Laura asked Jim how his "safety pin is working out." Jim responded with a deliberatley unfunny monologue about the size of his penis. -Before "Silver Leaf" (I think), Jim and Mac threatened to play all of Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" album. -I think Jon broke a snare on "Water Wings" +MONOCORN@aol.com is willing to write up CHUNK guitar tabs for the interested. Please write him and he'll see what he can do. +MERGE has finally given complete blessing to the CHUNKWWW site, so keep your eyes on the site for more COOL COOL COOL stuff. + another - from jchamber@niu.edu: Superchunk's Chicago show- EASTERN TERMINAL, IRON ON, WATER WINGS, PRECISION AUTO, TOSSING SEEDS, THE FIRST PART, ANIMATED AIRPLANES OVER GERMANY (Which Jim announced to be by The Connells), FROM THE CURVE, UNTIED, HYPER ENOUGH, SUNSHINE STATE, and TOWER. The encore consisted of MOWER and COOL. +last one this time, from edle6048@uwwvax.uww.edu MINNEAPOLIS - 'chunk opened with sunshine state and continued to play stuff off of every albumexcept "on the mouth". I'm almost positive there was nothing off of here. but they played "sick to move" and "slack motherfucker" off the first album. It seemed like this guy was yelling "slack motherfucker!" the whole show and when they closed with it, I guess i was kind of surprised. Right before the solo, Mac jumped into the crowd. Pretty funny, i guess. Off "No Pocky For Kitty", they played "punch me harder" and "throwing things" and one more song (i think). I don't remember the name. Off of "foolish", they played "like a fool" (1st of 2 song encore), "the first part", "driveway to driveway", and "why do you have to put a date on everything?". They sorta played a different version of "why do you...", different in that the end kinda rocked out instead of the normal version (hard to explain, sorry.) Off of the new album, "sunshinestate", "animated airplanes over germany", "a song about driving in kansas called 'eastern terminal'", "hyper enough", "our next single "detroit has a skyline', and one or two more songs whose names i can't remember. witty concert banter included jim trying to sell his guitar for 500 dollars and laura telling mac to get a "fucking belt!" I can't remember anything else. in the future, i will have for you a description of the "driveway to driveway" video as it is quite brilliant and i'm sure many of you haven't seen it. until next time...
