From PackageThf@aol.comWed Feb 14 00:05:27 1996 Date: Tue, 13 Feb 1996 21:44:08 -0500 From: PackageThf@aol.com To: mransfrd@umich.edu Subject: here it is: FORGED IT HEY HEY HEY! I'm back and badder than ever. But really. To start off this issue, here's some tasty info tidbits: >>COMING THIS APRIL from TOUCHandGO Records: "Lounge Ax Defense and Relocation Fund And Benefit CD" (whew! this is the cd i mentioned a few issues back) featuring songs from SUPERCHUNK, plus other cool bands - including Archers of Loaf, GBV, Yo La Tengo, Sebadoh, Jesus Lizard, and others... >>the Jan. issue of SPIN (Trent of NIN's the coverboy) has a review of "Hyper Enough" in the singles column, with special praise for "Never Too Young To Smoke"...plus a cool little CHUNK picture to boot >>plus some other band info you might enjoy knowing: Polvo may have a new album out on TouchandGo by spring's end (info courtesy of Ultra21@aol.com). Butterglory now have a new single ("She's Got Akshun") out now on Merge. Feb. 20 brings us a compilation cd of b-sides, 7"'s and other what-not from Archers of Loaf - all in "The Speed Of Cattle" on Alias. Also, there's a new Spinanes single out now with an album out sometime this month, on SubPop. moving on: >>some people have fielded me some Q's on the kind of equipment the band uses (guitars, amps, etc.), but i really don't know - if any of you know, please send your info my way....(at PackageThf@aol.com, remember) >>I've also been asked how the band wound up in Chapel Hill if they went to school up north...and, to tell you the truth, i don't even know where they went to school. SO, if anyone could tell me about that, it would be much appreciated. (oh, i am so ashamed) >>one last thing - I ordered "take the tube" but haven't gotten it yet - anyone care to share the song list on the video? thanks. ++an editorial from KGCOX@cluster.ucs.indiana.edu: I am responding to the question someone raised about what people think of the new album - "Strings". Too new, not the Chunk I love like Trash Heap and SLow and Sidewalk and Stretching OUt etc. For old Chunk lovers, like myself, I don't need to buy the album cause it isn't the Superchunk I love, but it seems they are in control of their fame, writing off what could be huge success. However, "Hyper Enough" is now their trademark song and that disappoints me but as I read all the messages and reviews people are sending in, there is no need to worry cause Mac and the gang are real and sincere or so I feel. It is nice, though, that people are accepting their transitional or more cohesive sound on "Strings". ANd why Superchunk is above all else for me? A - it's a balance. you got harder like mower or softer like the only piece that you get B - they resisted political jargon or corporate disclosure and C - cause they speak to me. oh yeah and because I like to pogo when I dance too. ++some thoughts from jzmull@hamlet.uncg.edu: I was trying to explain to someone the other day my thoughts on Foolish. Maybe somebody else can back me up. I think that musically Strings is better. On the Mouth is more fun. The older singles are more rocking. But Foolish is just a masterpiece. There's something about that album. I honestly don't think they'll ever top it. I think some of the reason is that it's such a set. I mean, to say that you could throw, like, "Shallow End" onto Strings and it wouldn't really make a difference but if you threw another song onto Foolish you'd destroy it. Same if you took one off. All the other albums seem like collections of songs, Foolish is a complete work of itself. Anyway that's all I have to say. ++a request from JARERO@PANAM1.PANAM.EDU: could everyone on the list e-mail MTV and request that they show the "Precision Auto" and "Throwing Things" videos. I would imagine that MTV would have to show the video (or at least be inclined to) if it got many requests for it. The 120 Minutes address is Minutes120@aol.com. If you all did it soon, it would insure they would get a flood of mail and they might actually do it! ++EURO-TOUR INFO from dkinder@uia.ua.ac.be: Superchunk and Seam will be playing live in Brussels on 11 February at a festival (approx. 23 dollars). ++a Q from SAS0066@alpha.CC.OBERLIN.EDU: has anyone already heard the superchunk -on paper it makes perfect sense, austrailian tour ep? if so, what all is on it? additionally, has anyone heard that band verbana, that i see a couple times in the catalog? i've never heard of them before...thanks ++with thanks to Ultra21@aol.com, biler@PO-Box.McGill.CA, todd@icu.com, FreedMan88@aol.com, Portastatc@aol.com, saranac@tribeca.ios.com, LadyDi888@aol.com, bigeye@jax.gulfnet.com, & gquan@unixg.ubc.ca for info. submissions - here's an update on the out-of-print merge releases: MRG002: Wwax - Live/Left (cs)** MRG003: Metal Pitcher - A Careful Workman Is The Best Safety Device 7"** MRG004: Superchunk - "What Do I," "My Noise," "Train From Kansas City"* MRG005: Bricks "Girl with the carrot skin" + 2 7" MRG006: Angels Of Epistemology - (self-titled 7")** MRG007: Superchunk - "Slack Motherfucker" b/w "Night Creatures"* MRG008: Wwax - Like It Or Not 7"** MRG009: Erectus Monotone-Vertigo ep 7" MRG010: Breadwinner-3 song ep 7" MRG012: Finger-Everywhere 7" MRG014: Superchunk - "Fishing" b/w "Cool"* MRG015: Coral - (self-titled 7")** MRG016: Erectus Monotone - Cathode Gumshoe 7"** MRG017: Breadwinner-?+2 7" MRG018: Superchunk - The Freed Seed ep* MRG019: Seam-Granny 9x 7" MRG026: Honor Role-Purgatory 7" MRG029: Butterglory - (self-titled 7")** MRG049: Rocket From The Crypt - (self-titled 7")** MRG035: Rocket from the Crypt-Pigeon Eater 7" MRG046: Butterglory-Our Heads 5 song 7" MRG050: Superchunk-Precision Auto re-mixes 7" (mail order only!!!) It was a co-release between Merge, Leopard-Gecko, and Simple-Machines + Furthermore, there was a bonus 7" included withe the vinyl version of "Foolish". It had the song "Foolish" which was left off the 7", but included on the CD single. This was a one-sided 7" with a lovely drawing on side B. It was numbered MRG060.5. + Also...The MRG004 "My Noise" 7" was put out under the name "Chunk", as that was the band's name before the NYC jazz band of the same name made a fuss. ++cool info from bdn116@cs.usask.ca: here are Mac's top nine albums of 1995 according to CMJ's year end issue (Rolling Stone also put it in their year end issue, pretty strange). 1.Yo La Tengo, Electr-O-Pura / 2.The Magnetic Fields, Get Lost / 3.John Coltrane, Stellar Regions / 4.Spent, Songs of Drinking and Rebellion / 5.Son Volt, Trace / 6.Guided By Voices, Alien Lanes / 7.Tortoise, Rhythms, Resolutions and Clusters 8.Laika, Silver Apples of the Moon / 9.East River, Poor Fricky ++another question from y'all from my indie/trendie pal dmf6396@sae.ssu.umd.edu (kidding, damon!): Many people may already know about what I am about to say, considering the fact that there are probably many more people out there who are way more into Superchunk than I am BUT...Several months ago I bought "Foolish" on 12" vinyl. This isn't something that I normally do (buying vinyl) because I am always afraid that I'll break it. Anyway, When I got the record home and opened it up, there was a 7" inside the record sleeve in addition to the full length album. I thought this was sorta cool; it was kinda like opening a Cracker Jacks box and finding a secret decoder pen or some such shit. The 7" was different than any other that I have ever seen though. On one side of it, was the song "Foolish" -. The other side of the 7" was unpressed (no grooves for music). Instead, it looks like a child or someone has taken a knife or some pointed object and scratched "PLAY ME, PLAY ME" real big all over the unpressed side. In addition to this, the child (or whoever) has drawn flowers and other such strange artwork surrounding where is says, "PLAY ME". When I first looked at it, I thought it might have been done by machine, or in some way mass produced, but there is no way. My question is: do I own some rare Superchunk collectible, or do I just own shit? I would appreciate someone who perhaps owns "Foolish" on vinyl to write me and tell me if this happened to them as well so I can once again sleep at night. (THIEFnote: i know that all 1st edition vinyl copies of "foolish" have the 7" with b-side etchings, but i don't know if the etchings are unique for each copies...if you care to share your etching story, write me) ++and, last but not least, a special offer from MROZEK@AOL.COM: I've put together a special tape of Chunk rarities....The price right now is 4 bucks but that is not set in stone(that includes postage). If you want a copy, send Email to mrozek@aol.com and I'll send you my address to send the check (or well concealed cash). In return i'll send you the tape. Some of the songs come from CD's, some come from vinyl, and other songs come from second generation tapes of vinyl, so the quality is mixed but it is audible so if you're a superchunk fan you'll like it. I wrote merge to ask their permission but they never mailed me back so I'm gonna go ahead and go through with it anyway. If you have any questions just Email me. If you know of or have any other songs Email me. This tape is a non-profit project.
