From PackageThf@aol.com Sun Dec 8 20:40:55 1996 Date: Sun, 8 Dec 1996 18:12:11 -0500 From: PackageThf@aol.com Subject: they shoot at the mines we dug Hello Chunk fans! Welcome to another edition of the Superchunk Internationale (e)Mailing List. Special welcome to those of you new to the list! First up, the Here With Superchunk web site has MOVED! The new address is: http://www.monkey.org/~chunk/superchunk Up now are the lyrics to The Laughter Guns EP, lyrics to more Porta songs, new guitar tabs, and all sorts of other new information. If you go to the old site, you'll still get a link to the new site, but that will only be up for a few months, so make a new bookmark now! Also, the soundtrack to the impending film Suburbia (which was already screened at the NYC Film Festival) - featuring a new Chunk tune - should be out sometime next month, specific date to follow. Also, even though its the same as the album version, you can find Hyper Enough on the soundtrack to Romeo and Juliet. I talked with Jon Wurster again recently. We discussed the process the band goes through in making a record. Right now, they've been on the road quite a bit, so they don't have too many new songs written. What happens now is that they'll write and rehearse until they have a good number of songs completed. This is a little difficult since Mac and Laura are often busy with Merge-related affairs, so they have to schedule the rehearsals sometimes. Then, once they have a good number of songs, they demo record them and, from there, go into the studio and record the final versions. Of course, they have to complete the artwork, press the album, do advertising, etc., etc.... which means that there might not be a new album until late summer, although a single will most certainly preceede it by a few weeks. So, yes, the new album isn't around the corner, but they are working on it. And, besides, the new Portastatic album should be out in March, so there'll be something to hold you over. Not only that, but it could come out sooner than that, so just keep your fingers crossed. Corrections: - I accidentally called the 3D's an aussie band in the last mailer...they're actually from New Zealand... - the interview at http://www.tripnet.se/magazine_groove/superchu.htm is in Swedish, not German some concert reviews: +from granthab@cybernet.co.nz: I thought i might attempt a review of last nite's show at the powerstation in Auckland NZ. I regret that I was unable to remember the full set, but the songs were (i think): her royal fistacuffs (a good way to start the show as the local college radio station has been playing it quite a bit in order to hype the show) - precision auto - animated airplanes over germany - skip steps 1 & 3 - silverleaf and snowy tears - shallow end - water wings (with intro by mac as a song about jim learning to swim) - driveway to driveway (a personal fav!) - hyper enough (definately the rowdiest the mini-pit was all night) - from the curve - the first part (HUGE!) break--encore like a fool (introduced as lady's choice by mac) - untied - 100,000 fireflies notes: the band seemed to be in very good spirits, much more energetic than I had seen them in 3 prev shows (2@the Fox in Boulder, and 1 opening for Belly in Denver). I've never seen mac bounce around stage so much. of course they did mention that it was the end of the tour about 4 times- so maybe that had something to with the mood of the evening. During song number 11, Laura's bass lost so many strings she just took it off and stood there for about 10 seconds looking like a deer in the headlights, before getting of stage, which prompted mac to just about stop the song all-together and say "ladies and gentlemen, miss laura balance" which she repsonded to with a not-so-nice look. This lead to a little freestyle jam for mac and jim while laura acquired one of the opening band's bass guitar, before they pounded into the first part, which as i mentioned earlier was huge. They absolutely shredded it. I was overjoyed with the amount of material from foolish, as any fan would be. I don't have really much else to say about the show, except that i thought the crowd was a little disappointing, both in size and enthusiasm. although i must admit to being quite relieved at the lack of crowd surfing. ps jim told a pulp fiction like catchup joke-it went" there were these 2 vomits walking down the street. eventually they came to this one town and the one vomit starts getting all teary eyed and whatever. so the other vomit turns to it and goes 'what's the matter with you' the other vomit replies' it's just that this was were I was brought up" He later blamed it on us as he claimed to have heard it for the first time in Auckland that day, i say don't shoot the messanger-if you know what i mean. +from srcha4@student.monash.edu.au: the gigs were insane. michael jackson was performing here the day before and the day after the chunk gig. supposedly, this was scheduled so jackson could attend (humour). the all ages show was a dud! there were no more than fifty people there. the over 18's show was SOLD OUT! this would probably be around the 1000 mark i guess. i was standing so close mac almost hit me in the head with his guitar. it was like we were watching a band practise session. i managed to meet each of the band members. the whole band signed a poster for me. laura was laughing at me when i was trying to take it off the wall. the set for the under 18's gig goes: 1.driveway to driveway, 2.seed toss, 3.new low, 4.green flowers blue fish 5.animated airplanes 6.the question is how fast 7.silverleaf and snowy tears, 8.iron on, 9.hyper enough, 10.cadmium, 11.first part, 12.precision auto. no encore. cadmium was done on request instead of mower. the drummer from smudge played keyboards on animate airplanes over germany. the set for the over 18's goes: 1.untied, 2.hyper enough, 3.cool, 4.punch me harder, 5.silver leaf & snowy tears, 6.iron on, 7.water wings, 8.sunshine state, 9.on the mouth, 10.mower, 11.why do you have to put a date on everything, 12.skip steps 1&3, 13.100,000 fireflies, encore: 14.tie a rope to the back of the bus, 15.driveway to driveway, 16.fishing. mac and jon did the drum/vocal trade during fishing. sensational stuff. jon and jim ended up lying on the floor in a whirl of feedback at the end. the whole band were jumping around for the entire gig, they were loving it. tie a rope was a request by a yobbo in the crowd. when he screamed "TIE A ROPE TO THE BACK OF THE BUS" jim asked "tie a rope to the back of your ass, no only kidding, you and me are just havin' fun right? we can tie rope to each other's ass's and swing eachother round the room. we can even hire some hookers to watch!" once again, alison (smudge) played keyboards on iron on. the 3d's were extremely good. look out for them. smudge (fronted by ex-lemonhead Nic Dalton) were also very good. some catchy tunes indeed. --- +an issue from KelleyPK@aol.com: I think that new Counting Crows song sounds a lot like "Animated Airplanes Over Germany"... Comments?? and last but not least, todd@icu.com is starting up a Spinanes fan page. I mention this because, as some of you might remember, the Spinanes (besides rocking as it is) opened for superchunk on some of the west coast dates of their last US tour. If you are interested in more info or have any info you can provide (lyrics, photos, etc.) please write to todd or check out the web site at http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/2865 that's all for now... if you have any questions, comments, or address changes, make sure to send them my way... same goes for any issues that you want to bring up for the list as a whole.... - dave -----CHUNKonTHEweb----- Merge Records: www.merge2000.com Here With Superchunk: www.monkey.org/~chunk/superchunk Superchunk Mailing List FAQ: www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/2605/chunkfaq.html
