Alternative Press, Issue 84, July 95 AP's Top 99 of 1985-1995 #70 SUPERCHUNK On The Mouth (1992) When On The Mouth was first reviewed in AP, the scribe who penned the critique said something to the effect that the record went down like "cold lentil soup." I can only hope the guy has seen or heard, rather the error of his ways. On The Mouth is likely Superchunk's shining moment to this point, expertly combining the band's early, hi-octane thrash moves with a slower, more mature sound that diluted none of its power. "Swallow That" is the defining track, its dirge-like crawl pretty much a Superchunk first giving way to a sharper, reined-in version of the usual buzz-saw strumming attack. From the amphetamine rush of "Precision Auto" to "From The Curve" (a perfect song, possibly the band's best) to the statement of purpose "The Question Is How Fast" to the emotional closer "The Only Piece That You Get," On The Mouth is a solid, thirteen-cut burner that set the stage for the band's future, almost fully realized by last year's Foolish, another great record whose hit-to-miss ratio isn't quite as high as On The Mouth's. A truly great American band, Superchunk makes a diet of cold lentil soup sound like nirvana. (Matador) Matt Hickey
