With opening acts Seaweed, Corner Shop. $ 7.50 advance, $9 at door. The Masquerade, 695 North Ave. N.E. 577-8178. Six albums on, Superchunk is more than Chapel Hill, N.C.'s gift to the teeming teen hordes of Lollapalooza. Though the manic foursome actually made it to Lolla's main stage for a few shows this summer, the band was happier on the second stage, where its propulsive mesh of squalling, overlapping guitars and the tandem slam of bass and drums was the stuff indie-rock dreams - and $4 beer buzzes - are made of. And better yet, people cared. Still unsigned after all these years, the band releases albums on its own Merge Records label, a fairly defiant act in this age of the $500,000 advance for Potential Next Nirvanas. "Here's Where the Strings Come In," the group's latest, conceals moments of uncommon beauty within a din that is by turns anthemic and reflective. Mostly though, Superchunk lives up to the promise vocalist Mac McCaughan makes in the first seconds of the record: "I think I'm hyper enough as it is!" The group turns that state of being into a guidepost to life. To hear Superchunk, call 511, enter 8600, then access code 490.
