monkey.org finances
Monkey asks for money occasionally, sometimes in exchange for services. Here
is an explanation of each, and suggestions for dealing with them.
User dues, $25/year.
If you use monkey regularly, we'd like you to donate this amount yearly. Some examples of regular monkey uses:Virtual web hosting, $5/month billed in 6 month increments.
- Storing large amounts of data on monkey disks.
- Hosting a maintained personal web page.
- Handing out your @monkey.org email address regularly.
- Using monkey services like domain registration or primary DNS, MX, mailing list or web hosting.
Virtual web hosts are independent of your personal web space. Domain redirects to your personal web page are excluded if the domain is for personal use only (vanity domains, etc.) Multiple domains serving the same content are treated as a single domain.Domain registration and transfer, $15/year not negotiable.
$15 is pretty cheap considering we also include DNS hosting. Monkey buys domain registration credits up-front from our supplier, so not paying up for them results in monkey losing money, a bad thing.SSL Certificates, $120/year not negotiable.
Hey, we sell certs too! Same deal as the domain registrations.Webmail/IMAP accounts, free or $1/month for non-monkey users.
We'll set up @monkeymail.org or @your-vhost.domain webmail/IMAP accounts for anyone you know. We'll also add a $1/month due to your invoice for each of them. It will be your responsibility to collect and pay up. Think of us as a wholesaler.Mailman mailing lists, $12/yearWe'll set up a @monkey.org webmail/IMAP account for free for any existing monkey user.
A mere $1/month gets you control of a mailman mail list. We reserve the right to renegotiate this fee if your list gets huge.Paying up
We're not the money police, though. If you're down on your luck, between jobs, working for charity or giving all your money to the man, we'll let it slide (Note: Domain reg and certs are the exception. Talk to us if you really need one, maybe we can find you a sponsor.) We'll still keep track of your user dues, however, just in case you make it big someday.
On the other hand, even if you really don't use monkey much we still like to see user dues, especially if you're not struggling financially. We'll see that the wealth is shared, and that monkey will always be here if you need it.
Monkey accounts.
We don't give out accounts to strangers. Everyone here knows dugsong, jim or dirt in real life. This helps keep out the riff-raff.
We generally do not terminate monkey accounts for non-payment. This doesn't mean that you have a free ride with monkey, if you abuse the above guidelines too much and resist our strong-arm tactics you might find your data missing someday, but this has yet to happen.
We do not terminate monkey accounts because we don't like you. We obviously liked you at some point, maybe you'll come around.
We do occasionally terminate monkey accounts due to inactivity. The bar is set at 6 months, after that we'll consider freeing up your space for others to use. Easy enough to log in occasionally to prevent this.
However, we do reserve the right to terminate accounts for any reason. But so far we have never had to show anyone the door.
Checking your "invoice."
monkey provides the 'invoice' command to check the status if your dues. It can display this info in three different formats. 'invoice' alone will show you your dues from the last time your balance was 0 through two months from the current date. 'invoice -m' will display a copy of the message that is sent to you automatically every month. 'invoice -s' will list the servcies you are currently using, how much they cost and when the service started. 'man invoice' for more information.
