The machine has something flaky with its PCMCIA setup: quite often it freezes during boot after showing the "setting tty flags" message. All I can do is power it off. However, it always boots OK if the card slots are empty. (I have a Netgear 410TX 10/100 Ethernet card and a D-Link DM-560 modem card.) I have just been given a used Sony VAIO Model 717 with a 3com 3c589D card. I installed OpenBSD 2.6 and when it boots it recognizes the ethernet card and the pcmcia controller (even though it says not configured at the top). The problem is when I configure it with ifconfig it wont work on the network. Ping spews "host is down" errors and I don't receive any icmp echo replies, however on my other computer I can see that it is sending arp requests for the ip I want to ping. Also Linux was previously on the laptop and it told me that the base address of the 3com card was 0x310 and the irq was 3. However OpenBSD tells me on bootup that it finds it at 0x340 with the irq 3. The 3com card worked in Linux. So is this a common problem? Should I put Linux back on the laptop? Do I have to install windows to get some addresses to put in the kernel? Or will it work at all? Thanks, Ben. Most portables have at least a few quirks in the pc-card controller (and everywhere else too, but that's another matter). One of these quirks is that usually not all the interrupt lines are connected, and there is no way to tell what interrupt will actually be generated by any particular device. The symptoms you describe are consistent with lost interrupts. I suggest you try a different irq for your device. If 3 doesn't work I would try 10 or 11. You will find a patch at my OpenBSD web page: http://www.citi.umich.edu/u/rees/openbsd/ The patch is for 2.5 but you should be able to figure it out. And yes, this is a FAQ, but I don't think we have a FAQ written up. This is the same as what happens to me on a Toshiba. Possible workaround: disable one or more built-in peripherals that you possibly don't need or can live without (eg LPT, COM). That frees-up their IRQ and will at least cause the PCMCIA logic to shuffle stuff around and give a "better" IRQ to your 389. Other possible fix: see if you can disable use of the IRQ's 2 and 9 from the BIOS. I'm pretty sure that the PCMCIA driver(s) don't handle that cascaded IRQ correctly. I disabled the LPT1: on my Toshiba and got my 3C589 working great. It was plunked onto IRQ 7 and we're in ether-heaven :-) -- -bmw | Double helix in the sky tonight | Throw out the hardware | Let's do it right -- Steely Dan; Aja From owner-openbsd-mobile-outgoing@monkey.org Wed Dec 8 10:18:21 1999 Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile-outgoing@monkey.org Received: by funky.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 502) id 13BAD1518A; Wed, 8 Dec 1999 10:18:20 -0500 (EST) Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org Received: by funky.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 3229D15190; Wed, 8 Dec 1999 10:18:14 -0500 (EST) Received: from research.suspicious.org (research.suspicious.org [209.236.159.254]) by funky.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C2AA11518A for ; Wed, 8 Dec 1999 10:16:34 -0500 (EST) Received: (from truman@localhost) by research.suspicious.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id KAA32112; Wed, 8 Dec 1999 10:18:54 -0500 (EST) Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 10:18:53 -0500 (EST) From: Truman Boyes To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org Subject: OpenBSD-mobile: "D-Link, DFE-650, Fast Ethernet" Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: openbsd-mobile-owner@monkey.org Precedence: bulk Return-Path: hi, not sure if this has been seen before ... this nic seems to work flawless. i have negotiated 10 or 100 both half and full duplexes. right now i am jacked in at a POP site, which pushes quite a lot of traffic across the ethernet. the dongle led blinks very rapidly, usually indicating a issue with the negotiated speed or duplex. right now the card is recognized as the following : breakdance/64/truman>ifconfig -a ne0: flags=8863 media: Ethernet manual inet 209.236.138.40 netmask 0xffffffc0 broadcast 209.236.138.63 this is what i see when trying to change media type breakdance# ifconfig ne0 media 10baseT ifconfig: SIOCSIFMEDIA: Device not configured so, i added the proper inet and netmask flags, adjusted the routes, and everything works. now i am working at 10BaseT at the momement. just strikes me as odd ... any thoughts ? It's recognised as an ne (NE2000) device, as is my Netgear 410TX. The driver for these devices does not support media selection. See the man page for ne(4). I believe that 'manual' means you set it with software that runs in DOS (or something). I don't know if that applies to PCMCIA cards. If it's working, should you be worried about the media type? The Netgear connects to my 10/100 hub at 100 Mb/s so it seems OK to me. If anyone does have a Libretto 50CT | or 70 please let me know, I would like to see your fdisk and disklabel | info as I can't seem to find any on the net. Hi, Here is the fdisk and disklabel info of my Libretto 70CT. Of course, I use whole disk for OpenBSD:-) I think you should try partitioning with Win95's fdisk, it keep the hybernation area automatically. fdisk wd0 Disk: wd0 geometry: 769/64/63 [3100608 sectors] Offset: 0 Signatures: 0xAA55,0x0 Starting Ending #: id cyl hd sec - cyl hd sec [ start - size] ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused 1: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused 2: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused *3: A6 0 1 1 - 769 63 63 [ 63 - 3104577] OpenBSD disklabel wd0 # using MBR partition 3: type A6 off 63 (0x3f) size 3104577 (0x2f5f41) # /dev/rwd0c: type: ESDI disk: label: IBM-DDLA-21620 flags: bytes/sector: 512 sectors/track: 63 tracks/cylinder: 16 sectors/cylinder: 1008 cylinders: 3152 total sectors: 3177216 rpm: 3600 interleave: 1 trackskew: 0 cylinderskew: 0 headswitch: 0 # microseconds track-to-track seek: 0 # microseconds drivedata: 0 16 partitions: # size offset fstype [fsize bsize cpg] a: 65520 63 4.2BSD 1024 8192 16 # (Cyl. 0*- 65*) b: 131040 65583 swap # (Cyl. 65*- 195*) c: 3177216 0 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 0 - 3151) d: 2097648 196623 4.2BSD 1024 8192 16 # (Cyl. 195*- 2276*) e: 810369 2294271 4.2BSD 1024 8192 16 # (Cyl. 2276*- 3079) hope this helps. It is supposedly supported by 2.5 and 2.6 but when I installed it, the system was able to recognized it but later it gave me a time out error. I was wondering if I have to make some modification to the kernel for it to work properly. The notebook that I am using is a Twinhead GX3 P3 450. Hope you guys can help me on this. Thanks. I don't use it as I prefer my 3c509 and a generic 56k. I think the suggestion of looking at your IRQs is a good one :) On another note... APM not mapping on thinkpads. I know there's an open report in gnats (524?) about APM problems. I would *really* really love to have a working apm on my thinkpad 380ed. Here's my 2.6 dmesg output with useful stuff compiled in. If anyone has a suggestion of what to do here I'd really appreciate it :) I read over the reports on this one over time and lots of things seemed to indicate that someone was looing at it. I'm just curious of the status. I've been able to get apm to work nicely on Free & linux on this laptop. I prefer to run Open and I'd like to never reboot :) OpenBSD 2.6 (STINKPAD) #1: Mon Dec 27 00:15:27 EST 1999 root@stinkpad:/home/opt/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/STINKPAD cpu0: F00F bug workaround installed cpu0: Intel Pentium/MMX ("GenuineIntel" 586-class) 167 MHz cpu0: FPU,V86,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,MCE,CX8,MMX BIOS mem = 651264 conventional, 49283072 extended real mem = 49934336 avail mem = 44027904 using 635 buffers containing 2600960 bytes of memory mainbus0 (root) bios0 at mainbus0: AT/286+(cf) BIOS, date 04/07/99 bios0: diskinfo 0xe03a200c cksumlen 1 memmap 0xe03a2088 pciinfo 0xe03a21 fo 0xe03a2128 apminfo: 30102, code f75e0/f0000[8a20], data 9f800[400], entry 0 apm0: can't map data apm at bios0 function 0x15 not configured pci0 at mainbus0 bus 0: configuration mode 1 (bios) pchb0 at pci0 dev 0 function 0 "Intel 82437 (Triton MX) PCI/CACHECOMP/DR 0x02 pcib0 at pci0 dev 1 function 0 "Intel 82371 (Triton MX) PCI-ISA and IDE" 3 "Neomagic Magicgraph 128ZV" rev 0x04 at pci0 dev 3 function 0 not config "Cirrus Logic CL-PD6729" rev 0x07 at pci0 dev 19 function 0 not configur isa0 at pcib0 isadma0 at isa0 wdc0 at isa0 port 0x1f0/8 irq 14 atapiscsi0 at wdc0 channel 0 scsibus0 at atapiscsi0: 2 targets cd0 at scsibus0 targ 1 lun 0: SCSI0 5/cdrom re cd0: can use 16-bit, PIO mode 4 wd0 at wdc0 channel 0 drive 0: wd0: can use 16-bit, PIO mode 4 wd0: 16-sector PIO, LBA, 2937MB, 5968 cyl, 16 head, 63 sec, 6015744 sect sb0 at isa0 port 0x220/24 irq 5 drq 1: dsp v3.02 midi0 at sb0: audio0 at sb0 opl0 at sb0: model OPL3 midi1 at opl0: wss0 at isa0 port 0x530/8 irq 10 drq 0: CS4236/CS4236B (vers 63) audio1 at wss0 pcppi0 at isa0 port 0x61 midi2 at pcppi0: sysbeep0 at pcppi0 npx0 at isa0 port 0xf0/16: using exception 16 pccom0 at isa0 port 0x3f8/8 irq 4: ns16550a, 16 byte fifo vt0 at isa0 port 0x60/16 irq 1: generic VGA, 80 col, color, 8 scr, mf2-k pms0 at vt0 irq 12 fdc0 at isa0 port 0x3f0/6 irq 6 drq 2 fd0 at fdc0 drive 0: 1.44MB 80 cyl, 2 head, 18 sec pcic0 at isa0 port 0x3e0/2 iomem 0xd0000/16384 pcic0 controller 0: has sockets A and B pcmcia0 at pcic0 controller 0 socket 0 pcmcia0: CIS version PCMCIA 2.0 or 2.1 pcmcia0: CIS info: 3Com Corporation, 3C589, TP/BNC LAN Card Ver. 2a, 000 pcmcia0: Manufacturer code 0x101, product 0x589 pcmcia0: function 0: network adapter, ccr addr 10000 mask 3 pcmcia0: function 0, config table entry 1: I/O card; irq mask ffff; ioma space 0-f; rdybsy_active wp_active bvd_active io8 io16 irqlevel pcmcia0: function 0, config table entry 3: I/O card; irq mask ffff; ioma space 0-f; rdybsy_active wp_active bvd_active io8 io16 irqlevel ep0 at pcmcia0 function 0 "3Com Corporation, 3C589, TP/BNC LAN Card Ver. t 0x340/16 irq 3: address 00:a0:24:a5:27:7a, utp/aui/bnc (default utp) pcmcia1 at pcic0 controller 0 socket 1 pcic0: irq 9 biomask 4040 netmask 4048 ttymask 524a pctr: 586-class performance counters and user-level cycle counter enable dkcsum: wd0 matched BIOS disk 80 root on wd0a rootdev=0x0 rrootdev=0x300 rawdev=0x302 regards, neal w. ___________ d neal wise - nwise@spy.net SPY internetworking - will network for food http://www.spy.net
