It used to never work well for my thinkpad until 2.6 (well... till XF86 3.3.something supporting neomagic). Keep in mind that not all tp's are equal. I have a TFT 800x600 in my 380ED. A friend of mine has an HFT in his 380ED. I'll mail you my config if you like. It's set up just genericly for the neomagic and probes for everything but it was generated from XF86Setup and does 16bpp 800x600 (which is the best my internal supports with its weird 1&1/8mb of VRAM on the neo mg128zv) Speaking of thinkpads. I'm glad to have apm support now but I can't resume after suspend. Screen comes on and everything looks hopeful but I'm never able to do anything. It just beeps after waking back up. I had this problem with linux when I've played with it on this machine but there was a kernel option that handled it. I have an evil operating system installed on another partition and I can suspend with it so it's not a configuration issue (i.e. I have a hibernation file). Hey Mickey this is the same issue I had with those test kernels from late 2.6 that you guys shared. I'm happy to look into what linux is doing with that but I'm hoping someone magically knows how to handle it :) Also... I've bought a 3c574 to replace my 589. I understand that -current contains support for this. Anyone running this card? Also happy to say that I'm running 2.7 on the sparcbook I got from Bob Zoller from this list. regards, neal On Thu, 29 Jun 2000, George Dodd wrote: > Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2000 16:10:40 -0500 > From: George Dodd > To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org > Subject: OpenBSD-mobile: OpenBSD and Thinkpad 560E > > Hello all, I was hoping I could get some help with setting up > my ThinkPad 560E under OpenBSD. > > Problem 1) > The video card is recognized as a Trident 9660 on boot. > When I had windows on it, it was recognized as a 9660. > SuperProbe tells me its a Cyber9382. > > Problem 2) > The XF86Config for it I found at > http://www.monkey.org/~dugsong/thinkpad/ > works as far as starting X up, but the right side of the display is all > screwy looking like its out of sync. On -current you can for the apm driver to use ver. 1.1, which might solve your problem (it did to me). I have a Sony Vaio PCG-F420 and running the GENERIC kernel, this operation works fine. reboot and shutdown do what they're supposed to, but running my own kernel seems to mess these up. the dmesg output from both kernels is almost exactly the same (less some scsi stuff) and I can't figure out what I've disabled in my kernel to make it do this. http://jcs.org/wonky/WONKY if you want to take a look at it. -- joshua stein | superblock information systems | http://superblock.net jcs@superblock.net | (gnu|p)gp key id: 2048/D8603211 | http://jcs.org From owner-openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Thu Jul 6 10:05:34 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 502) id A051C108682; Thu, 6 Jul 2000 10:05:33 -0400 (EDT) Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id C1A9C108681; Thu, 6 Jul 2000 10:05:32 -0400 (EDT) Received: from mail.rdc1.ne.home.com (ha1.rdc1.ne.home.com [24.2.4.66]) by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 09BC710868F for ; Wed, 5 Jul 2000 23:35:28 -0400 (EDT) Received: from www.slothnet.com ([24.17.110.30]) by mail.rdc1.ne.home.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.00 201-229-121) with ESMTP id <20000706033526.IYFB21323.mail.rdc1.ne.home.com@www.slothnet.com> for ; Wed, 5 Jul 2000 20:35:26 -0700 Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2000 22:36:52 +0000 (GMT) From: Joey Maier X-Sender: maierj@www.slothnet.com To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org Subject: OpenBSD-mobile: pcmcia card from smc Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: openbsd-mobile-owner@monkey.org Precedence: bulk I just got an old laptop (gateway solo 120MHz, 32MB ram) that I want to put OpenBSD on, but the NIC is not recognized during the installation. This makes the box far less useful than I had hoped. :( The card that is not being recognized is an SMC EZ PC Card 10 (a.k.a. "model SMC8022BT/T") The manufacturer's web site http://www.smc.com/smc/common/8022.html claims that this is card is an ne2000 compatible. Does anyone out there have experience using OpenBSD with the pcmcia NICs from SMC? Is there something special I need to do differently in a laptop installation to have the NIC recognized? (Sorry if the question is naive. I've installed a few PC's with Open, but I've never done a laptop before.) The only pcmcia references in the OpenBSD FAQ are an example of a dmesg (http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq2.html) a description of the PCMCIAVERBOSE kernel option (http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html) and an ifconfig of an already functional PCMCIA card (http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq6.html) My google search for additional information wasn't especially helpful. What other sources should I review for information on using Open with PCMCIA cards (specifically with SMC's cards)? I went ahead and installed from CD with 2.5 so that I could generate the dmesg output below to include in this post. (Please don't crucify me about using 2.5. I'm going to buy 2.7 at defcon, which is where I bought 2.5, which is where I bought 2.3....I've been buying the odd numbered distributions and using ftp for the even numbered ones :) PS - I've tried both the slots on the laptop, and have tried both floppy27.fs and the floppyb27.fs. and as long as i'm on the subject of vaios: is there any way to control the display brightness? ..under win* it was -f5 and then you used the arrow keys to twiddle the brightness.. also, the on-board sound (Yamaha DS-1S Audio) shows up at boot, but is not configured.. does this just require a non-GENERIC kernel? It's supposed to be detected as a PCIC, for example: pcic0 at isa0 port 0xfc5c/2 iomem 0xe3000/4096 pcic0 controller 0: has sockets A and B pcmcia0 at pcic0 controller 0 socket 0 pcmcia1 at pcic0 controller 0 socket 1 I too have a PD6729, on a Micron Millenia Transport. I only got it detected after mucking around with changing the IOPort & the address line bits. But, I'm not able to detect any PCMCIA cards even with that change. Can you try booting linux and seeing if it detects your PCIC? On one of the virtual consoles should be some details about PCIC probing, I was able to get the 0xfc5c IOPORT value from there. PCMCIA support has improved *greatly* since 2.5, so you might want to try a 2.7 floppy again and see if the PCIC is configured. - Jeremie On Wed, 5 Jul 2000, Joey Maier wrote: > I just got an old laptop (gateway solo 120MHz, 32MB ram) that > I want to put OpenBSD on, but the NIC is not recognized during > the installation. All went smoothly, excpet booting. I had to use this "boot select" DOS utility to install the boot block after I finished installing the OS. Best features about this notebook: it's very small and light, and it has an integrated ethernet card and port. No dongles! It's also cheap. So far, the only thing which I can't get work is the modem, because it's a PCTel software modem. I know there is an experimental driver for this in Linux. Does anyone know if it is going to get ported to the next release of OpenBSD? That's the only thing it lacks right now. I'm very happy with it. I can run OpenBSD and Postgresql and do all kinds of work with it. A few more questions: Should I install something like Gnome? I have no experience with these things. I would also like to try some kind of office suite. Any recomendations? If you have any questions about my Xconfig or dmesg, let me know. e From owner-openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Tue Jul 11 12:18:13 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 502) id 0A723108684; Tue, 11 Jul 2000 12:18:13 -0400 (EDT) Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 26425108683; Tue, 11 Jul 2000 12:18:12 -0400 (EDT) Received: from ben.profero.com (ben.profero.com [212.36.157.130]) by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1F611108693 for ; Tue, 11 Jul 2000 06:50:36 -0400 (EDT) Received: from vindaloo (host169.profero.com [212.36.157.169] (may be forged)) by ben.profero.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with SMTP id LAA12932 for ; Tue, 11 Jul 2000 11:47:15 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from darren@profero.com) From: "Darren Evans" To: Subject: OpenBSD-mobile: Using partition 3 id 0 problem Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 11:53:01 +0100 Message-ID: <000201bfeb26$2eea60e0$a99d24d4@profero.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook 8.5, Build 4.71.2173.0 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2919.6600 Importance: Normal Sender: openbsd-mobile-owner@monkey.org Precedence: bulk I tried several times trying getting OpenBSD booting and tried the stuff on the web site. http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq14.html#14.6 Don't know what to try next. Once the kernel's booting, = support for larger disks is there. This is largely true of all i386 = based OS's. It looks like the PCMCIA card is being assigned IRQ 3 after the suspend event, although that IRQ is most likely already occupied by a serial port or serial device. You might try bringing the interface down and back up and see if that reinitializes it to the correct IRQ (which is 9, according to your message...) We occasionally run into this problem on our Linux laptops, but the solution is a little cleaner. I know the 3com 556B has been supported for awhile, but the first time I tried it the card was identified, but wouldn't work. I blamed it on funky Libretto interupt conflicts and didn't pursue it. This time the net card was identified properly, it worked and the ftp install went fine. However, once I rebooted the system I couldn't get to the outside world, nor could the outside world get to me. "arp -na" showed the MAC addresses for the other two systems on the shared media network. "tcpdump", woah it starts to respond. exit tcpdump, connections stall "tcpdump -p", still nothing works "tcpdump", it responds again. so, I'm only seeing the network traffic when I put the net card into promiscous mode. I searched the archives for this and saw one reference to a similar problem. Could it still be an interupt conflict issue? I don't see any conflicts when looking at the dmesg output. diana OpenBSD 2.7-current (GENERIC) #141: Tue Jul 11 13:10:00 MDT 2000 deraadt@i386.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC cpu0: F00F bug workaround installed cpu0: Intel Pentium (P54C) ("GenuineIntel" 586-class) 75 MHz cpu0: FPU,V86,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,MCE,CX8 real mem = 33271808 (32492K) avail mem = 26107904 (25496K) using 431 buffers containing 1765376 bytes (1724K) of memory mainbus0 (root) bios0 at mainbus0: AT/286+(63) BIOS, date 10/13/97 apm0 at bios0: Power Management spec V1.2 apm0: battery life expectancy 100% apm0: AC on, battery charge high isa0 at mainbus0 isadma0 at isa0 wdc0 at isa0 port 0x1f0/8 irq 14 wd0 at wdc0 channel 0 drive 0: wd0: can use 16-bit, PIO mode 4 wd0: 16-sector PIO, LBA, 4126MB, 8944 cyl, 15 head, 63 sec, 8452080 sectors pcppi0 at isa0 port 0x61 midi0 at pcppi0: sysbeep0 at pcppi0 lpt0 at isa0 port 0x378/4 irq 7 npx0 at isa0 port 0xf0/16: using exception 16 pccom0 at isa0 port 0x3f8/8 irq 4: ns16550a, 16 byte fifo pccom1 at isa0 port 0x2f8/8 irq 3: ns16550a, 16 byte fifo vt0 at isa0 port 0x60/16 irq 1: vga 80 col, color, 8 scr, mf2-kbd pms0 at vt0 irq 12 pcic0 at isa0 port 0x3e0/2 iomem 0xd0000/65536 pcic0 controller 0: has sockets A and B pcmcia0 at pcic0 controller 0 socket 0 ep1 at pcmcia0 function 0 "3Com, Megahertz 3CCFEM556B, A" port 0x340/32 irq 9: address c0:01:86:1e:63:f5 tqphy0 at ep1 phy 0: 78Q2120 10/100 media interface, rev. 3 pcmcia1 at pcic0 controller 0 socket 1 pcic0: irq 10, polling enabled biomask 4000 netmask 4200 ttymask 5682 pctr: 586-class performance counters and user-level cycle counter enabled dkcsum: wd0 matched BIOS disk 80 root on wd0a rootdev=0x0 rrootdev=0x300 rawdev=0x302 Diana Eichert VP Technical Services Nothing in Particular at the Moment, Inc. deichert@wrench.com For PGP Public key http://www.swcp.com/~deichert/pgp_public_key.txt From owner-openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Wed Jul 19 12:21:45 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 502) id CE8991086A9; Wed, 19 Jul 2000 12:21:44 -0400 (EDT) Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 0C0FB108684; Wed, 19 Jul 2000 12:21:44 -0400 (EDT) Received: from mail.rdc1.ne.home.com (ha1.rdc1.ne.home.com [24.2.4.66]) by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB4501086A9 for ; Wed, 19 Jul 2000 12:19:21 -0400 (EDT) Received: from www.slothnet.com ([24.17.110.30]) by mail.rdc1.ne.home.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.00 201-229-121) with ESMTP id <20000719161920.PUDD17075.mail.rdc1.ne.home.com@www.slothnet.com> for ; Wed, 19 Jul 2000 09:19:20 -0700 Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 11:19:54 +0000 (GMT) From: Joey Maier X-Sender: maierj@www.slothnet.com To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org Subject: help @ blackhat?? (Yes, I know that they only differ in scsi support, but I didn't figure that out until after trying them. When I read Matt Behrens' 11/19/99 post http://www.monkey.org/openbsd/archive/misc/9911/msg00747.html I felt a little silly.) -- "When you understand UNIX, you will understand the world. ThinkPads and APM do have some problems. IIRC, something similar is mentioned in the APM documentation of the Linux kernel (2.2.16). I only see that with my wavelan card installed. Popping the wavelan brings things back to life. With -current I can then re-install, run wicontrol, and restart the dhclient to get things up and running. It's an inconvenience, but relatively minor. // marc From owner-openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Sun Jul 30 03:13:15 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 502) id ED6DB108685; Sun, 30 Jul 2000 03:13:13 -0400 (EDT) Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 20163108680; Sun, 30 Jul 2000 03:13:13 -0400 (EDT) Received: from ulysses.noc.ntua.gr (ulysses.noc.ntua.gr [147.102.222.230]) by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 914FE1086AF for ; Fri, 28 Jul 2000 15:09:14 -0400 (EDT) Received: from dblab.ece.ntua.gr (ithaca.dbnet.ece.ntua.gr [147.102.12.1]) by ulysses.noc.ntua.gr (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id WAA63900; Fri, 28 Jul 2000 22:09:01 +0300 (EEST) Received: from city.dbnet.ece.ntua.gr (city.dbnet.ece.ntua.gr [147.102.12.38]) by dblab.ece.ntua.gr (8.11.0/8.11.0) with ESMTP id e6SJ90m21921; Fri, 28 Jul 2000 22:09:00 +0300 (EEST) Received: (from george@localhost) by city.dbnet.ece.ntua.gr (8.9.3/8.9.3) id WAA09154; Fri, 28 Jul 2000 22:09:00 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from george) Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 22:09:00 +0300 From: Yiorgos Adamopoulos To: Felix Kronlage Cc: OpenBSD Mobile Subject: Re: OpenBSD-mobile: ThinkPad T20 audio probs solved Message-ID: <20000728220900.A9120@dblab.ece.ntua.gr> Reply-To: adamo@dblab.ece.ntua.gr References: <7155.964741891@hana.snafu.org> <20000728201234.A8777@dblab.ece.ntua.gr> <20000728195305.B2988@dang.hazardous.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.4i In-Reply-To: <20000728195305.B2988@dang.hazardous.org>; from felix@mad.hazardous.org on Fri, Jul 28, 2000 at 07:53:06PM +0200 X-URL: http://home.eu.org/~adamo Sender: openbsd-mobile-owner@monkey.org Precedence: bulk On Fri, Jul 28, 2000 at 07:53:06PM +0200, Felix Kronlage wrote: > Is the freezing up of the system after a suspend to ram a typical > problem with apm? > -fkr /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Configure.help line 9482: Allow interrupts during APM BIOS calls CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS Normally we disable external interrupts while we are making calls to the APM BIOS as a measure to lessen the effects of a badly behaving BIOS implementation.
