is the future really so bleak? an analysis of proposed worm futures

Jose Nazario, Arbor Networks, Ann Arbor, MI
Presented at PacSec, Tokyo, Japan, 2003

over the past several years, several researchers have made predictions on worm futures. these proposals include architectures for fast moving worms, often coordinated, which purportedly will devastate the internet more significantly than previously seen worms have. these designs include papers from zalewski, nazario et al., weaver, staniford, and wiley.

however, an analysis of these designs reveal several fundamental weaknesses which can easily be turned against the worm itself. furthermore, even with an aggressive warhol worm like sapphire, effective responses were put in place within hours and the worm was effectively contained. this presentation will discuss these proposals and reveal their weaknesses.
