How Google accidentally uncovered a Chinese ring of car thieves | The Verge -- AdWords is the core of the business of Google, delivering billions of data-targeted ads to browsers every year. Most of the bad products were counterfeit goods, and, as AdWords engineering director David Baker says, "We'd never heard of a counterfeit car." Scammers were taking pictures of cars on the street, and when a hapless customer showed up a few days later offering money, they'd steal the car and hand it over. In the case of the car scam, he says the offline component is the most important part, as a way to assure skeptical customers that the sale is legit. Baker and his team werent looking for cars or car thieves. Baker and his team will occasionally forward ads on to law enforcement, particularly if drugs are involved, but the relationship between Google and China is so complex that scams like this car theft ring usually slip through the cracks.
Loom: a better Photo Stream for iPhone and Mac | The Verge -- For Jan Senderek, every week used to end the same way: a grueling 10-step process for importing the weeks photos to his computer and syncing them to his iPhone and iPad for browsing. "I wanted to have all my photos on every device, but also to have the ability to manage photos from every device." When Steve Jobs announced Photo Stream in 2011, a new way to seamlessly sync recent photos between Apple devices, Senderek thought his plight had come to an end but alas, Photo Stream is limited to syncing only your most recent 1,000 photos. The Mac app is mostly for uploading new photos, but can also be set to download all new photos taken on your iPhone. The iOS app is a full-blown Photos app, as Senderek promised, letting you view all the photos in your Camera Roll, as well as from your Mac and iPad. Its quite similar to Dropboxs new Photos tab theres a list of albums youve created, a timeline of every photo youve uploaded, and the ability to drill down by date to find photos youre looking for.
