beauty and the street
hit with a stick

beth got some movable type (which has been used) as part of an art
installation. i think it makes nice photos ...
i have been hit
with a stick, thanks ai! for those of you that don't know, ai and i went
to high school together for a couple of years, i recently found him hiding
in a law school in DC, and now he's hit me with a stick. bright, insightful,
inspiring, and a guy who can write well, boatloads, and frequently and be
a law student. amazing ...
on to ... the stickening.
You're stuck inside Fahrenheit 451, which book do you want to be?
good question. honestly, even if i don't agree with a book, it's hard to
justify burning it. that said, i'd probably say something along the lines
of bad american history text books from high school. i think we deserve
better history books.
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
yes, but i'm not saying who. mainly because i can't remember who :)
The last book you bought is:
i think the last book i purchased for myself is the quiet american by
graham greene. the last three books purchased off of my wishlist, however,
are: Why Globalization Works by Martin Wolf,
Freakonomics : A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt, and
In Defense of Globalization by Jagdish Bhagwati.
i'm a huge geopolitical dork these days, i put non-fiction and educational
material on my wishlist.
The last book you read:
Born
to Buy : The Commercialized Child and the New Consumer Culture by Juliet
B. Schor. it sucked ... ad hominem attacks, mis-represented facts, inflammatory
rhetoric ... this is not the stuff of a good thesis.
What are you currently reading?
Monster of God: The Man-Eating Predator in the Jungles of History and the Mind by David Quammen. so far so good ..
Five books you would take to a deserted island:
probably things that make me think about the human condition and our
collective history.
- dox quixote in spanish, so i can work on my spanish.
- nabokov's "lolita", translated into english.
- sun tzu's "the art of war".
- focoult's discipline and punish: the birth of the prison (in the original
french so i can work on my french, too)
- a collection of john o'hara stories (i like him better than steinbeck)
Who are you going to pass this stick to (3 persons)? And Why?
- melinda, she needs a break from
her thesis, is a bright person and reads interesting stuff, and i'm
curious ot hear her take on things.
- eldan, because he is
much the same. a bright guy, good take on things, and i'm curious to
hear what he has to say.
- grey, because
he is someone who has a fantastic look at things, and again i'm curious.
current stick path as it got to me:
Barrie unleashed the stick on 3/7/05 - Amanda - scooterdeb - Brian - Karma Police - Evelio - Ivy - Suzanne - Jeff - Patricia Lockwood - Frank - Amy - Steve - Ginger - Scopylaw - AI - me ...
