From PackageThf@aol.comFri Oct 27 00:30:06 1995 Date: Thu, 19 Oct 1995 16:37:41 -0400 From: PackageThf@aol.com To: mransfrd@umich.edu Subject: SUPERCHUNK CONCERT - A PLAY-BY-PLAY (GROUP3a) I have lots to tell all of you - info-wise - but that will have to wait as I WENT TO SEE SUPERCHUNK LAST NIGHT, which is more important. SO - here's everything!!! i'm going into such detail so that those who can't see them know what goes on and so that those who will see them later know what to expect. LOS ANGELES - THE WHISKEY A GO GO 8pm - Show starts 9pm - I arrive, due to conflicting circumstances 9:05pm - The Spinanes start playing. I don't know how many of you listen to the Spinanes or have even heard them, but they did a great set. The band is only Rebecca Gates on vocals/guitar and a guy on drums whose name slips my memory. Rebecca was engaging but the drummer looked really spaced out - Rebecca later explained that he had a severe sinus infection but would keep playing anyway, although they might have to "stop for kleenex breaks - he'll tell you `snot stories' later!" The crowd heckled them a little for some reason. There should be a rule that keeps assholes from going to concert because these same people would later hurl comments at CHUNK...alas. approx. 10:15 - exit la Spinanes approx. 10:30 - entre SUPERCHUNK! mac wore a butterglory t-shirt, laura wore a tight black top, jim and jon wore non-descript t-shirts. they look just like in pictures, except that jim has really short hair (and is a mite bit balding, prompting him to say, on occasion "wait - i have to get the hair out of my eyes") BTW - all quotes approx. what the band said - i'm no stenographer. Mac sez hi, Jim talks about how it's odd to play the same venue 2 nights in a row and how it discomforts him - especially since he recognizes some people from the night before. Jon makes faces and laura twiddles with her bass. Jim: "How many people were here last night?" (crowd screams) "No screaming in my classroom! (smiles) Everyone be polite! My dad is here tonight so everyone be nice!" (crowd yells again) + EASTERN TERMINAL (note -the songs didn't come in this order, for the most part - i'm trying to keep band dialogue as close to the song i think it came with. oh, i might have left out a song or two, i'm not quite sure - i didn't write it down during the show) + HYPER ENOUGH (jim and laura mockingly try to push each other around the stage during this song) +ON THE MOUTH + (Mac: "this song is about racism") CAST IRON + (Jim: "Okay, here's our slow dance number. Couples! I want everyone to pair up, ladies' choice!" Mac: "This song is called) DRIVEWAY TO DRIVEWAY > (Jim - to laura: "Say something! I always say something!" Laura: "I don't know what to say!") + PRECISION AUTO (included an extra distortion segment) + (Mac: "Here's something from an album named Foolish") WHY DO YOU HAVE TO PUT A DATE ON EVERYTHING + (Rebecca Gates of the Spinanes comes out to join on keyboards - although you couldn't really hear them. as mac and laura tune, jim starts to tell a joke about fish and oral sex - which i'm not going to reprint - only to stop halfway - "punchline after the song" Jerks in the crowd heckle and Jim gets a little pissed, but instead acts like he can't hear them) IRON ON + (Jim finishes the joke and gets more heckling. Jim infers they're drunk - "why don't you go back to the bar and tip the bartender again!" Rebecca plays keyboards again, this time holding a miller lite cup in one hand and playing with the other - all with a bemused smile. Jim: "this song is silver-something and something.") SILVERLEAF AND SNOWY TEARS + (Jim: "here's an old one - i hope we can remember it. Laura?" Laura throws her arms up in a sign of victory, which jim repeats mockingly) CADMIUM + YEAH, IT'S BEAUTIFUL HERE TOO (the only time Laura sang in the whole show - "yeah yeah yeah") + (Jim: "I'll sell this guitar for $1000 - okay? $2000, where are the bids? come on!" (more crowd heckling - is it "indie/trendy" to heckle the bands or something???) Mac: "For $1000, i'll steal his guitar and give it to you!" Jim: "You do and i'll kick your scrawny little ass!" Mac: "We've been through this before!" Jim tries to kick mac, but mac grabs Jim's foot and makes him hop around instead) SICK TO MOVE + (Jim: This song is for the guy who i met outside of book soup today. you asked for it, you got it - it's a song by pavement. Trigger Cut!" but it's really-) THROWING THINGS >>people kept yelling out requests, including this one jerk who kept screaming : "f*ck you, play Brand New Love!" ENCORE: +(Laura: "You guys are so bad-ass!") THE QUESTION IS HOW FAST + TIE A ROPE TO THE BACK OF THE BUS + MOWER In short, they rocked - they were so good - even better than any album. It was a little hard to hear mac over the guitars at some points, but everyone already knew the songs, so it wasn't so bad. IF YOU DON'T HAVE TICKETS FOR A SHOW NEAR YOU _ GET THEM NOW!!! After the show - I got to meet Rebecca from the Spinanes. She's very nice and very down to earth - i saw her doing inventory on the Spinanes merchandise and helping to move the band equipment into their van. She told me to look for a new single in January with an album in February. I almost got to meet Laura, but this security guard told me to get lost. !!!
