From PackageThf@aol.com Wed Apr 2 12:04:34 1997 Date: Wed, 2 Apr 1997 04:19:39 -0500 (EST) From: PackageThf@aol.com Subject: light a flare for me mailing list> Hello and welcome to another episode of the Superchunk e>Mailing List! Here we go! (a new feature: hyperlinks in the mailer! if you have any problems with them, please let me know) >>TOUR STUFF: first from Matt of the Here With Superchunk (chunk@monkey.org): portastatic is playing at the independent music fest next thursday (april 3) at nyu. it's an all weekend long thing; during the day there's panels and speakers talking about all kinds of stuff from how to go on tour without killing each other to how to start a label to how to get signed...and at night, shows upon shows. this is their site: h ttp://pages.nyu.edu/clubs/imf/1997/index.html should be pretty cool. and as an added bonus--somehow the imf people tracked me down and asked me to be on a new panel they're having this year on indie music and the net. whoo! so me and some other indie people are going to yak about that on friday, i guess... >>Superchunk Tour Dates: April 4 - Durham,NC - Captured Live Studios (part of a conference sponsored by Duke called "RE-PRE-SENT-ING ROCK") April 18 - Harrisonburg, VA - James Madison University (part of a conference sponsored by JMU station WXJM called "MaCRoCk") >>for those of you who have wondered about the Superchunk "Teenage Rockin' Road Trip Shirt," Jon Wurster explains: There was a low budget flick in the early 80's called "Rockin Road Trip". It was filmed in Winston-Salem and tried to pass W-S off as Boston! The guy who did the "First Part" video had a small extra role in it. His name is Phil Morrison....I stole the artwork from "The Bad News Bears In Breaking Training" for the shirt. >>An update on the SXSW Portastatic show from regu9343@uidaho.edu: They came on after Merge's Ladybug Transistor. Started with sound check of "A Lovely Nile". Set included (not in order) "Hurricane Warning Ignored", "Flare", "Before You Sailed Around the World", "Spying on the Spies", "Bjjt", and a great "Bear That Chokes". Other tunes off the older album included "In the Manner of Anne Frank", "You Can't Win", "Isn't That the Way", and "Taking You With Me". The set was cut short by the SXSW officials who only gave Portastatic 40 minutes. Mac was pissed off by this, the crowd started yelling for more. Still no go. Mac made some comments about how SXSW stinks because there is no guest list for his friends. Still it was one of the most popular shows at the conferance, and I've never heard them sound better! Oh yeah, Mac has some cool new Adidas shoes! Slick! >>a group review of Superchunk's DC show, 3/22/97: >from zhowar1@umbc.edu: set list: Last Sunday*, Precision Auto, Driveway to Driveway, unknown new song*, Marquee* (referred to by Laura as 'retard, retard, freakout' because of the three parts of the song), Silverleaf and Snowy Tears, Water Wings, Green Flowers Blue Fish, Majestic*, Seed Toss (Mac: 'this is an old song, but it's been so long since we played it, it might as well be new'), Watery Hands*, Hyper Enough, First Part -exit & return (* = new tunes) -Lots of requests. Mac says 'thanks for the requests, but this one's called Untied': Untied, What Do I (sounded great) -Mac mentioned that DC is always their testing ground for new stuff -Laura wore a cool glittery bass strap (I love early 70's brit glam rock and therefore all that glitters) >from Mike_Spaeder@msn.com: Saw some notable dc music scene folk checking out the chunk-- Brian Baker(Minor Threat/Dag Nasty/Bad Religion) Ian Svenious (The Make*Up/Nation of Ulysses) Brian Nelson (Velocity Girl) Travis Morrision (Dismemberment Plan) >from martmj@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu: Overall they were great: very energetic and happy. The crowd was fairly into it too. There were a few meatheads shouting "slack motherfucker" throughout the show, but otherwise it was a great time. The new songs were strong, particularly Last Sunday, which had a very "First Part"-ish beat to it. Speaking of beats, Jon was AWESOME. On the down side, it seemed like they were still working out the kinks on a few of the new songs, and Mac's mike went out on one of them. But still it was as good a show as I've seen in a while. Not a whole lot of between song banter, and most of it had to do with apologizing for playing these new songs (but i don't think anybody was displeased by that). Laura at one point was explaining how she called one of the new songs (i think it was marquee) "retard, retard, freakout" because of its tempo. Jim quickly jumped in with "Well, that was very un-PC of you." and so Laura kind of sheepishly replied "um, i don't mean to insult anybody." also, when mac was taking a little too long between songs while getting a drink, Jim needled him a bit by saying "Our next number is a performance piece with Mac and bottle of water. It's a new one." >Dave's note: America On-Line's music review section will also be reviewing this same show - more details as they come. >>Last notes: If you bought a copy of Portastatic's THE NATURE OF SAP and the teeth that hold the CD in the case were broken, you weren't alone. Merge has been alerted to the defect. Coming soon: Could it be? It's still tenative, but Superchunk may be getting their own email address! More info next time! Okay, I think that's enough home-baked goodness for now. If you have any Q's for me, Q's for the list, address changes, comments, complaints, or anything else, please WRITE ME!!! See you all soon.
