Thank you for your reply.

This is kind of screwy but ifconfig for eth0 shows:
inet addr:147.48.69.5  Bcast:147.48.71.255  Mask:255.255.248.0

I notice in the routing table eth0 is:
147.48.69.5     0.0.0.0         255.255.255.255 UH     eth0

The above routing table does work though.
