I find that a loop of extracting some large tarballs with lots of
files (e.g. the distfiles for Qt, LessTif, and KDE base/libs) and
removing the trees again will reliably trigger the problem within,
say, half an hour.
The box just froze while extracting kdebase-2.0.1.tar.bz2.
