"routed: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway"

Every so often, I see this on the console (and in syslog):
Apr 18 15:20:40 hyperion routed[14267]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway
Apr 19 11:11:03 hyperion routed[3956]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway
Apr 20 15:29:17 hyperion routed[12495]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway
Apr 24 11:51:16 hyperion routed[12495]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway

Normally, this message immediately precedes total loss of routing
functionality, which is not a good thing.

(BTW: box is running a build from Mar.03/2000)

I've looked briefly at the routed source (just long enough to confuse
myself), but I have no idea what this means or what causes it.

Any ideas?
