Hmm, why not to use VESA? and add more modes?
for example I'd like to have 132x50 text mode..

Hope, I found 132 mode quite useful, especially for ipfilter ;)
For boot floppy, you always can use cpp to just don't use such code for
boot floppy. 

So, 132 mode quite useful. ;)
