memory oddity with i386 -current (with dmesg this time)

(apologies for sending this twice, forgot to include the dmesg output the
first time around...)

I've searched the archives and not found anything that really answered my
question, & since I'm a non-coder, trying to puzzle out the source isn't
an option... that said, I've a bit of a problem with a -current install on
an i386 box... dmesg follows. The machine started as a 2.5-release
install, with 320 MB memory, and all worked fine. I acquired a promise
tech ultra66 controller, and since that card isn't supported in -release,
I thought I'd take a swing at -current & see... (no joy there either, but
that's another story) I upgraded to the Sept 3 snapshot, then cvs up'd the
kernel and src, built a new GENERIC kernel, rebooted with it, did a make
build, installed new boot-block, and rebooted... that's where the problem
arose... the box now only sees 64 meg apparently. Thinking back, I
remembered a problem with some BIOSs not reporting memory properly, so I
built a new kernel with EXTMEM_SIZE set to 327680... reboot and it appears
memory is properly reported, and all looks good, until xdm starts, or
until startx is run manually, then the screen goes black, as though X is
starting up, but nothing happens... all services dead, no response to
ping, can't get in from other machines to see what happened... typing
(blindly) "cont" or "boot sync" will reboot the machine, so I assume it's
dropped into ddb, but I don't know absolutely... anyone have any thoughts
as to why that may be happening, or a remedy? My next plan is to grab the
X source, cvs update it to -current, and build that, but since that's
likely to be a fairly lengthy process (on the end of a 33.6 dial-up), I
thought I'd ask here first. If there's any other info I can provide, just
ask. Thanks!
