I have an older seagate 800MB drive which has developed bad sectors over
time... This is all speculation but it seems to me that when the system is
booted, bad sectors are no big deal.. But after it has been up for a while,
if I try to write to a file where there may be a bad sector, the entire
system will hang. No new processes can be created, existing processes run
fine. This is true except for a shell prompt- it will also be unavailable.
Network connections also contine to run in this condition, and I can switch
between pcvt terminals. Any ideas? This IDE drive is old enough that it
does not handle bad sectors internally...
