machine freezes up

Just got a new computer and scanner, (my problem) whenever I try to
do an attachment, it will attach to the letter but, the minute I hit
the send key the entire computer freezes up and I have to hit the ctrl.
alt. del key and re-boot, could it be because I have only 1 serial port?

Your help would be appreciated.
