Handbook woes

I think I've got the right boot blocks now on my Gateway Handbook (they're
from Oct 28). When I boot I get "BIOS error 0x1" about ten times, then it
seems to boot ok. And "machine diskinfo" tells me I have one more disk than
I really have.
But I still don't get apm:
mainbus0 (root)
bios0: boot API ver 2, 2; args 0xf02c3000[284]
bios0 at mainbus0: AT/286+(92) BIOS, date 08/19/93
bios0: apminfo 0xf02c300c diskinfo 0xf02c3034 cksumlen 1 memmap 0xf02c30d0
apm at bios0 function 0x15 not configured
isa0 at mainbus0
...
Also, twice now when I shut down the machine hung just after syncing disks
and I had to reload the BIOS. This is a fatal problem for me because it
requires equipment I don't normally take with me when I travel. Any ideas?
