Interesting.  I've not seen this directly, but I know what's causing it.
GTK+ (gdk-pixbuf) uses a data file to decide what it should do with
files.  We keep this file at /var/db/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders.  I be
yours is jacked up. :).

Try to manually run 'gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders
> /var/db/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders' as root to refresh this file.  If
it fails, email me directly, tho I'll be on a plane for most of
tomorrow :).
