Actually, that just got me closer.  The sucker finally built 
perfectly with:

-lgd -lz -lpng -lz -lgd -ljpeg -lm

> crc32 is defined in libz.

Yes - I figured that out after a while.  :)  I was just having issues
getting things in the right order.
