Before:

Time user: 403.341900, sys 133.934953
After:
Make runs: 2548
Time user: 133.668555, sys 135.766735
(collected RUSAGE_SELF across a `make index', with some tweaks
that are going in as soon as the current release is done.)
Note that this is on a reasonably fast machine (pentium 230MMX), as
compared to some of the very slow architectures we use.
`Grossly inefficient' and `pile of shit' come to mind.
Going to collect similar statistics for X11 and full builds soon...
