My impression is that the #N is to enumerate the generation of the
kernel on the current machine. For example, #50 is a high number
because they built a whole bunch of kernels on that machine before
releasing it. If you build your own kernel, it'll go back to #0
because you're on a different machine, and then count up as you apply
patches and make new kernels.
I could be wrong though. :)
