Strange Disk Issues

I just installed 3.6 on a old machine. Here's the
output of a disklabel:
# disklabel -pm wd1

The disk in question, a Seagate Model #ST340810A has a
label saying it's a 40GB drive. The specs also say
5600 rpm. When I put a file system on it it only gives
me 31 GB file system. Any ideas why I'm not getting 40GB?
