How do I invoke gmake on a Makefile?

Hi -- 

 I recently messed a tarball installation of the Mozart programming
system, I am told, by invoking make (that is, BSD Make) instead of the
required GNU Make.
 How do I invoke GNU Make on something? (having installed the package,
of course). Did find this with apropos, man or in the FAQ.
