yes, you do want console=d.
I don't have a monitor hooked up to the machine, I'm also using
a serial console.
also, INSTALL.sgi says
To change to serial console, go into the ARCS Maintenance Console
and change the ``console'' environment variable, and power-cycle
the machine.
