The pthreads library currently being used is far from perfect. A lot of
improvements have been made over the last 2-3 releases to try to fix
the majority of the issues but in the current state not much more can
be done. There is an on-going side project to write a replacement pthreads
lib which will be kernel backed and would fix most of the current issues
as well as allowing for the lib to take advantage of MP systems.
