Just install the tarball from Sun into the location of choice.

As for managing packages on Debian, try /usr/bin/aptitude and read the 
internal help (as well as the man page).  It's very effective once you 
grok it, and is one of the reasons I use Debian on my desktop (where 
package churn tends to be very high).
