mod_ssl

How can i enable mod_ssl into the default apache installation ?
I'm following this tutorial :

(i want to share mozilla calendar with webdav)

but this link refers to Apache 2, anyone can tell me the right way with  
Apache 1.3 ?

the second part of the tutorial seems to work (i've made some changes)  
but, as expected, without ssl access it doesn't let me read the test  
file.
