Your ext3 filesystem is probably dirty.  ext2 and ext3 share on-disk
compatible formats only if volume is clean.  You'll need to boot into
Linux and run fsck.

You may also need to delete the journal to convert the filesystem back
to ext2.  This can be done using 'tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/blah'.
