Re: Different sized SODIMM causes kernel panic in laptop? [with complete ddb outputs] [Uhhh, work-around found?]

(Thanks to Chris Kuethe for suggesting changing the available memory!)

Interesting, when I shrink the size of available memory by 712,703 bytes

boot> machine memory -0xadfff_(_at_)_0x5ff00000
Region 0: type 1 at 0x0 for 636KB
Region 1: type 2 at 0x9f000 for 4KB
Region 2: type 1 at 0x100000 for 1570816KB
Region 3: type 1 at 0x5ffadfff for 0KB
Region 4: type 2 at 0x5ffae000 for 328KB
Region 5: type 2 at 0xfeda0000 for 384KB
Region 6: type 2 at 0xffb00000 for 5120KB
Low ram: 636KB High ram: 1571512KB
Total free memory: 1571452KB

The machine boots cleanly and is happy.

But, when I shrink the memory by 647,167 bytes it doesn't. ( Not going to bother to much deeper for 32/16/8/4/2/1 KB increments)

On a Dell Latitude D600 laptop running OpenBSD 3.4 freshly re-installed and/or OpenBSD 3.4-current (cvs updated 4/15 5:05 PST) with a custom or GENERIC conf build, I am not able to boot the kernel with out getting a Kernel Panic. For more particulars see below....

0) This machine has had a fully functional OpenBSD image on it for the last 11 months. This is the first problem I've had. The only "custom" changes in my kernel are...

1) With a 1 GB SODIMM and a 512 MB SODIMM in either of the two slots of the laptop, Open BSD dies with a "DDB> " error (trace & ps Details attached below)

2) With either RAM removed, OpenBSD boots cleanly, thus I think it's not likely the RAM itself.
2a) Furthermore FreeBSD 5.2, RedHat Linux 9, Fedora Core #1 and Windows XP all boot fine with both SODIMMs in the laptop.
2b) Under each operating system I have fully exercised the RAM, to the point where I have less than 50-100MB of available RAM left.
2c) I have run Dell Diagnostics for several loops and have had no failures. I have repeatedly ran Memory tests against both SODIMMs and have had no errors.
2d) My local IT support has tried this RAM in several laptops, and it works in all of them. Just not booting OpenBSD 3.4.
2e) It doesn't matter which SODIMM is in which slot, OpenBSD won't boot with both installed at the same time. Though it will boot fine with either one of the SODIMMs installed, and can fully exercise the complete available RAM.
2f) I have put another 512MB SODIMM with the original 512MB SODIMM and OpenBSD boots normally, thus I do not believe it is a slot or memory socket issue.

3) With the OpenBSD 3.4 CD or booting from the bsd.rd kernel, I can successfully boot to a shell and mount the filesystem. But, not able to run a freshly installed kernel from the CD, nor can run a newly re-configured, and re-compiled kernel and system from a CVS update on April 15th at 5:05pm PST.

4) I need to have over 1 1/4GB of RAM in order to successfully do a portable demonstration on Wednesday of this week, thus I can't just live with 1GB.

So, any ideas?

Scott
