zgrep is supposed to show the matches from the .gz file, just like
grep would on the unzipped file.  It's not supposed to say "binary file
xxx.gz matches".

It took me a few seconds to figure that out.  It would have been better
if the original poster had stated this explicitly to avoid any confusion.
