I've also seen this as a PSU problem, speaking of which I need to go
pickup a new one today because of exactly this issue (only with a
different OS, but symptoms are the same).

It got more weird as time went on, i.e. it would refuse to boot until
memory DIMMs were swapped around, then only if just a single memory DIMM
was installed, then it would boot part way and crash, etc...  All the HW
is known good, so last option is the PSU (which has started sounding
"funny" several weeks ago, so I should have known better).
