updating ports - tag needed?

I read that only src uses a tag to define the revision desired when
updating via cvs or cvsup. Distros such as ports, XF4, and www do not
use release tags but instead follow current.
At the same time, I understand that using a different release from the
system release that you are tracking can cause problems (e.g. running a
-stable ports tree on a -current system.)
So, if I always track -stable for my system src tree, and ports tree is
only distributed as -current, am I going to have problems if I update my
ports?
