/dev/MAKEDEV doesn't generate wi[0-3]

I've added a Linksys wifi card to my laptop running 3.3.
DMESG at boot reports the card is not configured.
I try to configure using ifconfig, I get the error message
"nonexistent device". When I try to create the devices
using /dev/MAKEDEV, wi is not recognized as a valid device
type.

How do I configure and initialize the card?
