Did you configure your /etc/X11/XF86Config with proper values for your
system? If not xdm will continuously loop trying to start an X session,
which could give the behavior you are describing.

Is anything more needed to activate xdm-controlled logins beyond setting


in /etc/rc.conf?

Doing only that on my system results in a blank screen with blinking cursor
instead of
a login screen after boot..
