have you changed any permissions?

from my /etc/mailer.conf (3.3) I see clearly:
$ ls -al `awk '/^sendmail/ {print $2}' /etc/mailer.conf`
-r-xr-sr-x 1 root smmsp 581632 Mar 29 20:57 /usr/libexec/sendmail/sendmail
$ grep smmsp /etc/passwd /etc/group
/etc/passwd:smmsp:*:25:25:Sendmail Message Submission Program:/nonexistent:/sbin/nologin
/etc/group:smmsp:*:25:
