kde 3.0.5 password question

I deleted all of the packages on 3.2 and reinstalled
from the 3.2 package collection. I installed kde
3.0.5 software. Everything works. Just now when
I started typing my password to unlock the kde
desktop, My keystrokes are echoed as '*' characters.
Previously there was never any echo. Is this
the normal behavior for kde 3.0.5?
