Ramdisk boot for Sparc

Sorry if this has been discussed previously, but I can't find anything
via Google or the archives. I'm attempting to install 3.2 on an SS5 via
either miniroot in swap, or bsd.rd on an existing NetBSD 1.5.x
filesystem.
Attempts to boot the miniroot are basically ignored; there is a brief
error about /chosen-something-or-other, than it boots the NetBSD image.
Booting the ramdisk gives the following error, then dumps to openprom.
Rebooting with command: disk /bsd.rd
Boot device: /iommu/sbus/espdma_(_at_)_5,8400000/esp_(_at_)_5,8800000/sd_(_at_)_3,0 File and
args: /bsd.rd

Booting /bsd.rd @ 0x4000
Bad format
Program terminated
I hope this question is well received and that someone here has
attempted this before (the FAQ suggests it can be done). No offense is
intended by referencing the NetBSD existing install... rather, I'm
simply trying to "upgrade" it. ;-)
