OpenBSD uses a primary partition of type A6h (Net/Free is no Open (A6)
is found), but only to get the offset of the disklabel from the origin
of the disc.

I.e. you can put a one-cylinder (or even one-track) partition A6h and
place the slices where you want (be careful to not overwrite the disklabel
in that case, tho).

You _might_ be able to patch the kernel to also look for an A6 partition
within a 05, 85 or 0F partition, and in fact (not yet looking at the
source) it may be easy.

Ack.

Is there demand for patching the kernel to look at the A6 partition
at some different place? (Not addressing the boot loader issues)
