Yes SpamAssassin
http://spamassassin.org/
does a nice job of detecting spam and making it possible to ignore it.
Problem is, sweeping it under the carpet doesn't discourage more from
showing up. There's also
http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/bogofilter/
which might be slightly more efficient since it's a C program not
perl. Both of these can afford to be more aggressive since they work
on an individual basis and don't actually delete mail without the
user's consent.
I think both Theo and I want to do something that actually makes life
harder for spammers. Theo is willing to spend more resources to make
life more painful for open relays. I haven't got those resources, and
think there's too much spam that gets to machines I administer other ways,
so I want cheaper ways that kill more spam messages faster.
