i don't know how to help you with the route problem, but do a "touch
/var/log/ppp.log" as root and see if ppp starts to log there (and if it doesn't check also /etc/syslog.conf).  in any case if ppp.log doesn't
exist ppp should log to /var/log/messages

(and yes, tun0 will be your external interface)
