Now I'm logging in. I believe the problem was with the ppp.conf file! I tried to set that config file when things did not work and forgot all about it...

does your isp require pap or chap authentifcation?
pap
set up both /etc/ppp/{pap,chap}-secrets
done and working
can you ping the modem?
yes

my remaining problem is that after logging I get the following:
local IP address 195.xxx.xxx.xxx (from ISP's pool)
remote IP address 192.168.1.100	(I believe this is on the ISP's
							 internal network)

I cannot ping the 195.xxx.xxx.xxx

ifconfig -a gives me the following:
PPP0: flags=810<POINTOPOINT, MULTICAST>mtu 1460
	inet 195.xxx.xxx.xxx --> 192.168.1.100 netmask 0xffffff00

any clues? I should be able to ping that ip, right?

if I do a tcpdump -i ppp0 I get echo-request and echo-reply...
