ftp-proxy benefits?

I've read through the man page for ftp-proxy and understand how to configure it, but I'm still fuzzy on what it does exactly.. more specifically, when it is a good idea to use in practice. What are the advantages afforded by ftp-proxy that you won't get from a firewalled ftpd without ftp-proxy?
