PHP4 w/ mysql w/ Apache on 3.1

hi,
  I am trying to get PHP4 w/ MySQL w/ Apache on 3.1 .. on a test server
I get this error..
Fatal error:  Call to undefined function:  mysql_pconnect() in
so I add to CONFIGURE_ARGS+= to 
--with-mysql \
[...]
I still get this error.. I have confirmed that PHP4 works
with phpinfo() function. Googling It appears a lot get this error.
Does anyone know how to set this correctly on 3.1?
