Sendmail failes without daemon running

I am having a problem sending mail one of my machines. The machine does not run a sendmail daemon. I send mail, and get watch ps -ax, and see this:

13096 p0 I 0:00.03 send-mail: ./g711gZng013096 localhost: user open (sendmail)

Which makes me believe that it's trying to connect to a local MTA, however, there's not one running. I've already read through the FAQ and mailing lists, and saw a couple of threads that appeared to deal mostly with misconfigurations and relaying. However, I'd made no configuration changes whatsoever. I've checked /etc/hosts, and it's fine. Any other suggestions?

I'm running 3.1 with all patches applied. Here's a the maillog entries for the above mentioned attempt to mail. I think what I need to to is figure out how to make it use another system as an MTA, but not sure how. I'm running the exact same configuration on 2.9, and it's working normally.

Thanks,
